Stuart Hillard is the talented and hugely creative home-sewer described by May Martin and Patrick Grant on the first series of BBC’s The Great British Sewing Bee as the person who “brought the joy into sewing” and who Tatler were “devastated” to lose from the competition. Stuart sewed as a child to keep out of trouble and found himself lost in a world of fabric and thread. It was moving into his first home at 21 that spurred Stuart to buy a sewing machine and he hasn’t looked back.
For over 20 years Stuart has been sewing and designing home décor projects, teaching and encouraging others to give up the rules and just enjoy sewing. More recently he has become a monthly contributor to Popular Patchwork Magazine and a leading figure in the quilting community. In June 2013 he started a column for the magazine, Scrap Attack! and in 2014 he became a columnist for both Essentials and Sew! magazines.
Stuart’s first book, SEW FABULOUS, was published by Orion in August 2014. USE SCRAPS, SEW BLOCKS, MAKE 100 QUILTS was published by Pavilion in August 2017 and they will be publishing his third book QUILTS ARE AS EASY AS 1, 2, 3 in August 2019.
In December 2018 Stuart is appearing as a guest judge on Channel 4’s primetime Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas.
Stuart lives in North Yorkshire with his partner Charles and, when he isn’t sewing, enjoys cooking and travelling. His aim in life is to rid the world of “stitch-phobia” and the sewing police.
